Perception, Illusion and Distortion / a short abstract film by Maxi Merlin (KD)
As part of my bachelor’s thesis, I explored the phenomenon of time in an experimental and abstract way. The result is a film in which physical theories such as the block universe, entropy, and the many-worlds interpretation intersect with philosophical questions about consciousness and subjective perception.
Analog image experiments form the foundation of my visual narrative, in which fragmented perspectives overlap, as if the camera itself were wandering through different temporal realities.
The film is divided into individual acts that, like a clock, provide a linear framework. While within them, time dissolves, distorts, repeats, or is called into question.
The visuals are accompanied by an atmospheric soundscape, inspired by modular synthesis and composed live to the video, making the nature of time palpable through sound.
The project invites viewers to experience time not just as a theoretical construct, but as a tangible, constantly shifting dimension.

Im Rahmen meiner Bachelorarbeit habe ich mich auf experimentelle und abstrakte Weise mit dem Phänomen Zeit auseinandergesetzt. Entstanden ist ein Film, in dem physikalische Theorien wie das Blockuniversum, Entropie oder die Viele-Welten-Interpretation auf philosophische Fragen nach Bewusstsein und subjektiver Wahrnehmung treffen. Analoge Bildexperimente bilden die Grundlage meiner visuellen Erzählung, in der sich fragmentierte Perspektiven überlagern, als würde die Kamera selbst durch verschiedene Zeitrealitäten wandern.
Der Film ist in einzelne Akte unterteilt, die wie eine Uhr den linearen Rahmen bilden, während sich in ihrem Inneren Zeit auflöst, verzerrt, wiederholt oder infrage gestellt wird.Ergänzt wurde das Visuelle durch ein atmosphärisches Soundscape, das, inspiriert von modularer Synthese, live zum Video komponiert wurde und den Charakter der Zeit auditiv erfahrbar macht.
Das Projekt lädt dazu ein, Zeit nicht nur als theoretisches Konstrukt, sondern als spürbare, sich ständig verändernde Dimension zu erleben.
